One Direction release first single without Zayn Malik

The newest single from a Zayn-less, One Direction proves to be their best one yet and no I’m not being biased because I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for guys with British accents. ‘Drag Me Down’ was a surprise release for Directioners, and it’s already on the verge of outselling one of their biggest hits ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.

‘Drag Me Down’ starts a new era for the now foursome, finally showcasing what their voices can do and a more mature sound that they’ve been talking about for ages. The three minutes of ‘Drag Me Down’ exudes what it is to be in the pop-rock genre. With sounds that may be influenced by older bands like The Police and Fleetwood Mac, it’s less focused on instrumentals and more focused on their metaphorical lyrics. Between the guitar riffs and bass bumping sounds, the new One Direction could hopefully bring in some new fans. The lyrics are equally shared amongst the guys, with Harry and Louis taking most of the large notes and Liam and Niall holding down the chorus. With about a minute left of the song, it seems that Harry will now be hitting those notes that we only thought Zayn could hit with as much soul or more.

‘Drag Me Down’ is refreshing and feels like the new wave of their musical talent is finally being tapped into. One Direction is currently on their North American leg of their 2015 Honda Civic Tour and you can still grab tickets here. You can also get the surprise new single on iTunes now.
